Grotesque animal
A WIP sketch for a painting. I've got a bit of an obsession/fascination with brains at the moment, and it's been creeping into my sketches more and more lately.
I originally had the entire tail showing, but decided that cropping the image off on the right might add a little more interest and ambiguity.

ofMontreaaaaaaal!
Sooo...I saw ofMontreal at the Sled Island festival on my birthday, and man they put on a amazing show. Not only did the band members dress to the nines, but they also had these two guys in black unitards and glitter masks doing performance art on stage to help convey the messages in their lyrics. At one point (I think during Gronlandic edit) they came down to the front and blessed the crowd with glitter! One of the poor guys ended up taking a confetti gun point blank in the gut though. It was rad to see Calgary people actually dancing to a live band (omg!!), but I was still getting some serious stink eye for jumping around and screaming like a complete retard.
Man, what a good weekend.
Ps- I was totally standing next to the balloon guy on the far left.

Lorelei, lotus, circus and THE BATMAN
Greetings! For those of you in or around Calgary I'll be selling some paintings and prints on June 21st at the 1st (hopefully) annual Artist's Collective Market. Some other fine young illustrators such as Brennan Kelly, Chika Ando, and Heather Reinhardt will be participating, plus a ton of other super talented people.
So yeah, if you're looking for some swank pictures to hang on your wall AND want to support some broke graduates, here's your chance.

And now for something completely different (Part 2)
Here are some quickie wallpaper patterns I painted up for a food-themed charity auction. I printed them off small and cute, so they'll hopefully look good on someone's wall as a little series. People dig that shit, right?
For those of you in Calgary around June 5th, the live auction is taking place at the Alberta College of Art and Design. Come on down and buy some art!

A bit of obscure canadian history
Apologies for the lack of updates, but now with school over and done with and I finally have time to tend to my poor neglected blog.
Here's a little 2 page informational comic about the Ripple Rock explosion. Ripple rock was a natural shipping hazard that sank over 120 ships before it was blown up in 1958. Apparently it was the world's biggest explosion before the invention of the nuclear bomb. Aaaaand.... it all took place near my hometown, so naturaly I grew up thinking it was a pretty big deal, but literally no one I've ever shown this to has ever heard of it. Oh well, let this be your education.

And now for something completely different...
A quickie school assignment. We had to design two characters representing extremes in lifestyles and attitudes. This is a lot more graphic and derivative than i'm used to doing, but it was nice to get out of my comfort zone of rendered, painterly stuff.
I plan on continuing down this avenue more in the near future.
