More old timey folks

Here is some more work I did for the Parks Canada project.
There was a lot of back and forth on these, so I thought it might be interesting to post some process sketches.

For the project as a whole, the art directors wanted the images to stick pretty tightly to the reference images provided. As someone who primarily does more conceptual illustration, it was a constant temptation to stray away from the material provided and add my own spin on things.
It took several rounds of revisions for each set of images, but in the end we did find something that made us all happy.
For some projects you get hired to do your thing, for others more so to provide a service.
This project was a bit more of the latter, but that made it all the more challenging and rewarding in the end.

Thanks to all the fine folks over at Parks Canada for this one!

Oliver Sacks

Here's a new painting I did just for kicks. I've been trying to gear my portfolio towards more editorial work, specifically portraiture.
I recently read about this dude named Oliver Sacks, a neurologist and author that suffers from a condition called Prosopagnosia (Facial Blindness). I thought that the man and subject matter would be fun to tackle in an illustration.

Nest

Hello everybody!
I guess It's time that I post this.

So through some cosmic random happenstance I am having a show in August. I made it one of my goals for the year to somewhere, somehow score a gallery show, so as you can imagine I am ridiculously excited.
I'm showing six pieces from the past year plus three new paintings I feverishly whipped off this past month.
So if you happen to be in Victoria BC in August feel free to drop by!
here are the three paintings!

The Valencia Wreck

Hello all.
Here is a recently completed project for Parks Canada about a famous nautical disaster which took place off the coast of Vancouver Island during the early part of the 20th century.
I had a month to create 8 illustrations and one wooden Diorama depicting the horrific event. I won't go too much in to the details of the story here, but I totally recommend that you guys read up it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Valencia
This was probably one of the most enjoyable assignments I've had ever had the fortune of working on.
It was a pleasant surprise when the art director asked that I work in ink wash, a medium that I rarely get to visit these days.
Thanks to Dan Pach and the fine folks at Parks Canada!

Everything is going to be part of an interactive display about the history of the West Coast Trail, so if any of you guys are going to be in the Tofino area next may, stop by the Wikininish Visitors Centre and check it out!
